Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the Mecca of impoverished travellers. Relative to the rest of Northern Europe, food and lodging are reasonable, and there's still plenty of stuff to see. It's clean and apparently pretty safe. And everything you've heard is true: hash is (mostly) legal, you can buy sex of most persuasions, and they have some seriously nice museums. It's also postcard cute, what with all the canals and tall skinny houses. Tourist activity seems to be concentrated in a few places: along the Damrak, Museumplein, and Leidseplein, around Centraal Station, and in the Red Light District. We enjoyed breaking away from the foreign masses and exploring the homier neighborhoods around the Vondelpark, and in the Jordaan, west of Dam Square. Unfortunately, we only had about 3 days in Amsterdam altogether.
